Echoes of Fátima n. 4

Why are we in Fatima?

October 13, 2005

This simple question has been asked of us time and time again from people all over the world in all languages. Even though Junette and I have no problem understanding why we are here at times it is hard for people to grasp our motivation.

Here is the simple answer: We love Our Lord and Our Lady enough to give everything so that we may serve Them and the people of God. Our life has been guided by that thought for over 38 years and when the opportunity came to move to Fatima it was only a natural move for us.

Junette could be spending her time playing with her great grand children and I could be working on my golf game but we both knew that greater service awaited us. Here are some of our services that we find that makes a fuller life for us.

Junette delivering your petitions to Our Lady in a shopping cart, teaching English pronunciation to a Portuguese Priest, attending the blessing the statue of a “Our Lady of Life Within”, working with the Nuns, lay people from Japan and the Philippines, The Monastery of the Dominicans, the Sad and Pensive, sister Lucia. The arrival of Pope John Paul II in Fatima, a Colonel in the USAF distributing Communion, The ring given to Our Lady by Pope John Paul II “Totus Tuis”, The Crown of Our Lady with the bullet given to Her from his assassination attempt.

Yours truly, Alan, giving a tour guide to Canadian Youth Group.

My work is a little different. I work with the Religious Houses, teach computers, help the Priests and Brothers, take the photos and lead piligrims and youth groups around Fatima.

Our apartment is like an international airport. From one day to the next we don’t know what language will be spoken or who will be visiting. Sort of like heaven will be, I guess!

Why are we in Fatima? The photos above tell the story and we haven’t had a moments’ rest since we’ve arrived. Isn’t that nice. We know why we serve you, it’s because your worth it.

Prayerfully from Fatima,
Alan & Junette Merwin
Our Lady of Fatima Apostolate
